Southern Command
Southern Command is a formation of the Indian Army, active since 1 April 1895. In 1879, the Presidency Army system was integrated into a unified army of four commands under a central Commander-in-Chief. The Presidency armies were abolished with effect from 1 April 1895, unifying the three Presidency armies into a single Indian Army. Southern Command is the largest and the only tri-service theatre in the country today.
National War Memorial
It was the concerted efforts of Puneites, via many organizations that helped establish the National War Memorial in 1988. This structure is Pune's homage to those Marathi bravehearts of the Indian Army who have sacrificed their lives during the many battles India fought after gaining its independence. Inscriptions of all their names, details of various battles India fought, an airplane, an army tank and a model of a ship are on display here apart from the main memorial monument.
