Remarks

An idol painter paints the eyes of goddess Durga on the auspicious occasion of mahalaya. Mahalaya is the beginning of the 5-day annual Durga Puja festival. The most crucial step of idol making is the painting of the eyes, especially that of Goddess Durga, which is called “chakshudan” or "chokkhudan" and done on Mahalaya. Viewed from anywhere in the puja pandal, it should appear that Maa Durga’s eyes are looking at oneself. Hence, it is necessary for the painter to have steady hands, concentration and fortitude to bring out the liveliness of Goddess Durga.

This painting by child artist Souhardya Talukdar (14 years) received a Silver Medal in Khula Aasmaan child art contest for September 2021.
