Painting demo by Chitra Vaidya in oil pastels

Object drawing and object painting video of step by step live painting demonstration by artist and art educator Chitra Vaidya. This painting demonstration was part of Khula Aasmaan art workshop at Warvada ashramshala. This ashramshala is a school for tribal girls in Dahanu taluka of Palghar district in Maharashtra. You can see the enthusiastic participation by the girl students in this painting workshop.

बदामाच्या झाडाच्या पानात अनेक रंग दिसत होते . लाल, पिवळा, केशरी, मातेरी, आणि हिरवा. मूळ हिरवे पान बदलत्या हंगामानुसार रंग बदलत होते. पानाचे निरीक्षण करणे, त्याचा आकार, रंग, पोत समजून घेणे किती महत्वाचे असते हे अधोरेखित करणे हे या चित्र प्रत्यक्षिकाचे उद्दिष्ट होते.

चित्र काढण्याची पहिली पायरी म्हणजे त्या पानाचे निरीक्षण करून त्याचे रेखांकन करणे. दुसरी पायरी म्हणजे त्याचे रंगलेपन करून दाखवणे. हे चित्र रंगवण्यासाठी तैल खडू वापरण्यात आले. तैल खडूनी त्वरित रंगवता येते आणि ते वापरण्यास सोपे असतात.

हे चित्र रंगवताना विविध रंगांचे अनेक स्तर एकावर एक लावण्यात आले. आधी फिकट आणि मग गडद रंग वापरले. अशा प्रकारे आधी पिवळा, मग हिरवा, केशरी, लाल आणि मातेरी रंग वापरण्यात आला."

Artist and art teacher Chitra Vaidya is an avid painter and a popular art educator. Chitra is an alumnus of Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. She has been conducting art workshops and painting demonstrations for students, corporates and other organisations.

Leaf as the subject

This leaf of an almond tree had multiple colours - red, yellow, orange, brown and green. The original green leaf was undergoing a transformation with changing seasons. Objective of this painting demo was to highlight the need for close observation, understand the form, colours and texture of the leaf which was the subject for this painting.

First step was to observe the leaf and draw its outline. Next step was to demonstrate colour application. The colours chosen for this painting demonstration were oil pastels. Oil pastels are considered a fast medium because they are easy to paint with and convenient to carry. This painting of a leaf was done with layers of various colours on top of one another. Starting with lighter tones, oil pastels of medium and dark tones were used subsequently. Thus, yellow was used first followed by light green, orange, red and dark brown.

Painting by the girls

After this painting demo, the girl students of Warvada ashramshala were asked to select any object of their choice from within the school campus. They painted the object of their choice with oil pastel colours on paper.
